Internships

Our interns are volunteers who are looking to begin or continue their work experience. Our internships require a minimum three month commitment and the positions are normally limited to a maximum of twelve months (but can be extended under special circumstances). These positions are "virtual" in the sense that all work is done remotely. Interns choose their own work schedule and level of commitment but work under the close supervision of one or more members of our Board. There will be regular contact by e-mail, telephone and/or conferencing tools such as Skype or Zoom.

Application is open to adults over the age of 18 (or younger with parent/guardian approval). We are currently considering applications for the following internships:

Fundraiser/Grant Writer. The fundraiser/grant writer intern will initially perform research to identify suitable grant-awarding organizations in the areas of travel, research, equipment and operating grants. They will then work closely with one or more members of our Board to write and refine grant applications in one or more of these areas. This position is exceptionally well suited for individuals who are considering a career in the fundraising aspects of non-profit organizations. Anyone interested should contact us initially with an introduction stating their availability and why they would be suitable for this internship.

UX Designer. The UX designer intern will work closely with one or more members of our Board to help design one or more new parts of our website. The applicant should have at least familiarity with UX design principles and some hands-on experience (completing tutorials counts). Preferably that experience will be with Figma, but, if not, a willingness to learn Figma is essential. An interest in online education is a bonus, as is an interest in indigenous peoples culture. Anyone interested should contact us initially with an introduction stating their availability and why they would be suitable for this internship.

Web Designer/Developer. The web designer/developer intern will work closely with one or more members of our Board to help design and implement changes to our website. The applicant should be familiar with all or most of the following web technologies and how to deploy them across different browsers, browser versions and desktop and mobile operating systems: JavaScript, JavaServer Faces, HTML 5, CSS 3 and jQuery. Knowledge of any of the following technologies would be an advantage: JS frameworks such as REACT, Apache Tomcat, J2EE/Java Servlets, JavaServer Pages, Spring, Hibernate, Linux and mySQL. Familiarity with responsive frameworks such as Bootstrap (4.5 or later) would be a big advantage. Anyone interested should contact us initially with an introduction stating their availability and why they would be suitable for this internship.
